What Are Google AI Overviews?

Google AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of Google search results, above the traditional organic blue links. They were introduced as part of Google's Search Generative Experience (SGE) and rolled out broadly in 2024. By 2026, they appear on a significant percentage of informational and commercial queries.

How AI Overviews Work

AI Overviews pull information from multiple sources across the web and synthesize an answer directly in the search result. Instead of needing to click through to read a full article, users see a concise, AI-written response on the page.

Alongside the summary, Google cites a small set of sources it used to generate the answer. These are shown as linked websites next to or below the overview. While users may still click through, many get what they need without leaving the search results.

Why AI Overviews Matter for Traffic

For businesses and publishers, AI Overviews change the traffic equation:

  • A page can rank well for a query but still lose clicks if the AI Overview answers the question before users scroll.
  • Being cited in the AI Overview becomes a separate goal from ranking in the top organic positions.
  • Click-through rates (CTR) on many informational queries may decline, even when rankings stay the same.

This means SEO strategies must now consider both traditional rankings and visibility within AI Overviews.

How Google Chooses Sources for AI Overviews

Google selects sources for AI Overviews based on a mix of relevance, quality, and trust signals. Key factors include:

  • Topical authority: Sites that consistently publish high-quality content on a subject are more likely to be used.
  • Direct, clear answers: Content that explicitly answers the query in simple, structured language tends to perform better.
  • Structured data: Markup like FAQPage, HowTo, and other schema types helps Google understand your content and surface it in AI-generated answers.
  • Trust and experience signals: Domain authority, author expertise, and strong page experience (speed, mobile usability, security) all contribute.

How to Increase Your Chances of Being Cited

To improve your odds of being referenced in AI Overviews, focus on Answer Engine Optimization (AEO):

  • Structure content around specific questions: Use clear headings (H2/H3) that mirror user queries and provide concise answers immediately below.
  • Use FAQ schema: Add FAQ sections that directly address common questions and mark them up with FAQPage schema.
  • Optimize for clarity and scannability: Short paragraphs, bullet points, and clear definitions help AI models extract accurate answers.
  • Maintain clean technical SEO: Fast loading, mobile-friendly design, proper indexing, and consistent internal linking all support better visibility.

From SEO to AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)

Traditional SEO focuses on ranking pages in the top organic positions. AEO extends that focus to answer engines—systems like Google AI Overviews that generate direct responses.

AEO emphasizes:

  • Question-based content architecture
  • Structured data and schema markup
  • Clear, authoritative answers
  • Strong site and content-level trust signals

How Migrate AI Helps

Migrate AI builds Agentic Websites with both GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) built into the content architecture from day one. That means your site is designed not just to rank in traditional search, but to be surfaced and cited within AI Overviews and other generative search experiences.
