What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

Vik MakarskyyVik Makarskyy

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimizing your website's content to appear in responses generated by AI systems, including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and AI Overviews in Google Search.

GEO is closely related to AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and is sometimes used interchangeably. If there is a distinction, it is one of emphasis. AEO focuses on getting your content cited as a direct answer to a question. GEO focuses more broadly on appearing within any AI-generated output, including summaries, comparisons, and multi-source responses.

Both require the same foundational work. Your content needs to be accurate, well-structured, and written in a way that AI systems can extract and paraphrase. This means clear headings, direct answers, and structured data like FAQPage JSON-LD schema. It also means building topical authority: covering a subject area deeply enough that AI engines treat your site as a reliable source, not just a one-off article.

GEO is becoming a standard part of content strategy because generative AI is now a primary interface for information discovery. Users who never click a blue link still get recommendations, comparisons, and answers, and those answers come from somewhere.

The practical difference from traditional SEO: SEO optimizes for a ranked position. GEO and AEO optimize for mention and citation within generated content. A site can rank highly in organic search and still be invisible in AI-generated results if the content isn't structured correctly.

Migrate AI builds Agentic Websites with GEO and AEO built into the content architecture from day one.
