What Is Zero-Click Search?
Zero-click search describes any search query that ends on the results page, without the user clicking through to a website. The user gets what they needed from the search interface itself.
Zero-click results appear in several formats:
AI Overviews. Google's AI-generated summaries appear at the top of results and answer the query directly. Users read the answer, then close the tab.
Featured snippets. A single page's content is extracted and displayed prominently above organic results. The user sees the answer without visiting the source.
Knowledge Panels. For branded searches, Google surfaces structured information about businesses, people, or organizations directly in the results sidebar. Phone numbers, hours, and addresses are all visible without a click.
People Also Ask boxes. Expandable Q&A cards that let users explore related questions without visiting a single page.
By 2026, a significant share of Google searches result in zero clicks. For businesses, this creates a real tension: strong rankings don't always translate to traffic.
The strategic response isn't to stop ranking. It's to optimize for presence, not just clicks. Being cited in AI Overviews, featured in snippets, and visible in Knowledge Panels builds brand awareness even when the click doesn't happen. When the user is finally ready to act, they're more likely to choose the source they've seen repeatedly.
